Edward J. Stern

Founder & President
Edward Stern is managing member and founding principal of Hartz Capital the investment arm of The Hartz Group, a closely held company with a diverse set of business interests, including real estate, securities and commodities trading, and direct equity investments.
Prior to forming Hartz Capital, Mr. Stern served as president and CEO of The Hartz Mountain Corporation, then America’s largest manufacturer and distributor of pet supplies. Mr. Stern oversaw the successful reorganization and sale of this business, The Hartz Group’s core, legacy operating business.
Mr. Stern has been an avid local and regional running competitor for over 30 years. He races frequently around New York, placing in the top 3 in his age group consistently. In 2012 he was nominated for NYRR Runner of the Year in the Masters 45-50 age group.
Mr. Stern serves and has served on a number of philanthropic boards including the board of directors of The Gateway School, The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, the board of Trustees of Columbia Grammar School and the investment committee of UJA Federation.
Mr. Stern holds a BA from Haverford College (1987) and is a Thomas J. Watson Fellow (1988). He lives in Manhattan with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Beth Rein, and three children.
